Sony’s Untapped Advantage
Hello All,
I look at this site time to time and I have been speaking with my brother about the next generation of consuls and what they’re going to look like. The conclusion I have come to is I think Sony will go with raw power, as many on this site seem to thing. I’ve also looked at the market and think it will just be a repeat of this generation unless Sony looks at its other advantages over Microsoft.
First I brake a concludes abilities into 4 categories, Inputs, Outputs, Hardware, and Connectivity.
In this generation the Wii is a Input heavy conclude, it focues on getting people to put more inputs into the machine. The 360 is an Connectivity Heavy machine, with Live and trys to be in the Hardware arena but falls short. The PS3 is Heavy Hardware and trys to get into Connectivuty. Bot the 360/Ps3 tossed on Inputs (Move and Connect) to try and get into that.
So who has outputs? Right now all you have is rumble for force feedback. Wii U is adding the control screen to up the output a bit.
Output however is where Sony has its main advantage. Sony produces form outstanding speakers, subs, blue ray player. If sony wants to causes a crushing blow to micro soft, it should come packaged with 5 surround speakers, and in a perfect world add 4 lights for ambient lighting to work with the game.
I call it ‘ambient gaming experience’ no one really controls this market and I think it’s where Sony needs to go, and in the past as tired to go unsuccessfully. How many people justified the PS3 as a Blue Ray player when it first came out? If it was a full-fledged home surround system, and your player, it would be a very easy sell as your ‘home entertainment solution’.

My ideal set up for this would be two units, a front unit, and a back unit. The Front unit would hold the cpu/disk drive/hard drive as well as power the front left, right and center speaker. In addition 2 multi-color LEDs to add ambient light near the screen. This would be wireless connected to the back unit, powering the back right/left speakers as well as two additional multi-color LEDs for again, ambient effects.
I’ve purposely left out the sub-woofer and 7 surround speaker support. While I would love these things I would think the size and shipping issues would become a problem. As well sub-woofers demand allot of power and tend to be more expensive. Having a ‘sub-out’ would be fairly cheap and allow people to buy a sub matching their needs.
The other option is soundbar and woofer. This takes allot less room, is only 2 units and the woofer is great for games. Sony also has this technology. This would also remove the rear unit, and shrink the over all footprint. I personal would prefer a 5 speaker solution but its something to bring up.
If Sony can be the dominate unit in the movie us, it will find its able to not only push Microsoft around but get some of the ‘casual’ market because of its dual function. These we’re just a few of my thoughts, and I hope it spurs some discussion.
